Some of the consequences of these fires are obvious but others are less well understood. Our new PNAS paper focuses on the increasingly important contribution of wildfire smoke to overall pollution levels in the US. These far-reaching pollution effects from wildfire smoke mean that consequences of fire extend far beyond property loss; other ongoing research in our lab shows links between wildfire pollution and birth outcomes, test scores, mental health and life expectancy. …


Low quality soils are the source of multiple problems in global smallholder agriculture. A lack of plant essential nutrients — such as nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, boron, and zinc — in the soil directly leads to plant deficiencies and reduced size and nutrient content of the food grains. Additionally, degraded soils often limit the effectiveness of fertilizers, as the applied nutrients become unavailable to the crop due to adverse conditions in the soil. Ineffective fertilizers become unprofitable for smallholders, discouraging their use and thus preventing the replenishment of soil nutrients during annual cultivating. With today’s computing power and free satellite imagery, generating a crop yield map from satellite data is relatively easy. Knowing if that map is accurate or not, however, can be surprisingly difficult.

Bad weather in sub-Saharan Africa increases the spread of HIV, according to a study published in the June 2015 issue of the Economic Journal.

When the rains fail, farmers in rural areas often see their incomes fall dramatically and will try to make up for it however they can, including through sex work. Analysing data on more than 200,000 individuals across 19 African countries, the research team finds that by changing sexual behaviour, a year of very low rainfall can increase local infection rates by more than 10%.

As Earth’s population grows toward a projected 9 billion by 2050 and climate change puts growing pressure on the world’s agriculture, researchers are turning to technology to help safeguard the global food supply.
